How to Teach Education Without Technology in the Classroom

Technology can improve education in good schools, but it cannot substitute for capable instruction that engenders student motivation. No computer in the foreseeable future can do this. It requires the interaction of a human teacher who can provide tailored attention, encouragement, inspiration, and scolding.

If teachers were to teach without technology in the classroom, they’d have to focus on developing their teaching methods. They’d have to find ways of enabling students to interact with each other and to access standardized quality content. They’d have to recognise that some students will be able to pass exams by lucky guesses or by copying other people’s work. They’d have to know when to challenge these students and how to get them to do the hard work.

Teachers are also capable of something that no technology for the foreseeable future is likely to be able to do: generate ongoing motivation in their students. They can do it by being interactive, adaptive, constructivist and student-centered. They can do it by being able to explain complex topics in a way that is engaging, interesting and accessible. They can do it by being able, not just to answer questions but to encourage their students to think for themselves.

Communication

Writing essays teaches students how to express their thoughts and beliefs clearly. This is a useful skill that will be invaluable in their careers and future lives. It also helps them to develop an understanding of their subjects and explore new ideas. Technology has made it possible for students to access a wide range of academic resources and information, which can aid them in their essay-writing process.

It is also important to remember that, no matter how interactive and adaptive technology is or how student-centered and EFotM it is, if the students are not motivated, they will not learn, regardless of the technology. Good teachers can generate ongoing directed motivation in students, something that no technology for the foreseeable future is capable of doing on its own.
